Someone Was Watching

Someone Was Watching Summary

The Barton family is devastated by the tragic death of their youngest daughter Molly, who is presumed dead after her coloring book is found washed up on a nearby riverbank.

Molly’s older brother Chris has a hard time accepting his little sister’s death. While he and his best friend Pat watch a family video taken on the day Molly disappeared Chris notices a strange anomaly: Bud Butler, the elderly proprietor of the local ice shop was at the river front in his truck and was not selling ice cream. When he tries to communicate this clue and the hope that Molly might still be alive to his parents, they do not believe him. However, he and Pat seize onto the idea and begin investigating alone.

Acting on the assumption that Bud might know something about Molly, Chris and Pat look up Bud’s ice cream shop only to find out that their acquaintance and his wife have skipped town. Although Frank, owner of a cookie shop next door to Bud’s is convinced his superior product stole their customers, Chris and Pat find it hard to believe that the Butlers would leave their business in the middle of the tourist season without a good reason.

Desperate to know what Bud is concealing, Chris and Pat follow him to New Mexico. There they discover two more pieces of evidence at the Butler residence: a new privacy fence and play set. This new development solidifies their suspicions and they prepare to launch a rescue. What transpires next is an action-packed and edge-of-the-seat chase as Chris tries to save his little sister.

What We Liked

Someone Was Watching has a strong family theme. Chris, and Pat were willing to go to any lengths to rescue Molly, despite their operating under a desperate suspicion that even they themselves doubted was true. Chris particularly displayed heroism towards the movie’s climax when he chased the kidnappers down on a borrowed bicycle. By diving into the water to save Molly from drowning, he had to face the fear of water that had been tormenting him since his sister’s disappearance.

It’s rare to see that kind of superior sacrifice today. Lots of people will envy the bravery of a heroic figure and claim that they would act similarly under the same circumstances, but in today’s culture of divorce and dysfunctional families, few would really follow through. If families can’t make the effort to live in love and harmony, who would expect them to make courageous sacrifices for their own flesh and blood.

Someone Was Watching gives an inspiring view of the kind of devotion family members should have for each other as well as the willingness to put their lives upon the line when necessary. We think this film was a great tool to strengthen family ties and motivate family members to have greater love and respect for each other than before.
